Kohll’s Wagey Drug at 27th and Vine Streets has a new look. Gone are the faded burgundy awnings that once hung over the drug store where thousands of people walked into Wagey Drug. There, patients were greeted with a friendly smile by helpful employees that were sure to remember your name. The pharmacy has been a landmark in Lincoln since 1924.
Bright new blue awnings take the place of the previous coverings, along with an electric sign which shows the pharmacy’s services and new product lines. Products such as items for breast cancer survivors who have undergone a mastectomy, and a wide variety of mobility equipment that ranges from wheelchairs and scooters to electric stair lifts and reclining lift chairs. But just because Wagey Drug may look a bit more snazzy these days doesn’t mean that personal service has been sacrificed.
“Those awnings have been on this building in Lincoln for over 50 years,” said Gary Rihanek, RPh, and the previous owner of Wagey Drug as well as the current Pharmacist in Charge of the new Kohll’s Wagey Drug, “and getting a bit of a ‘face lift’ is just what the property needed!”
On February 1, 2015, Wagey Drug officially became Kohll’s Pharmacy & Homecare, based out of Omaha.
“I have been wanting to reduce my hours and eventually retire,” explained Rihanek. “My family was not interested in taking over the business and I wanted to find a company similar to Wagey and its beliefs to purchase it. Kohll’s was a perfect fit.”
Kohll’s, like Wagey Drug, was founded by its namesake, Louis Kohll, in 1948. What started out as one location at 29th and Leavenworth Streets in Omaha is now nine locations in the Omaha metro, Southwest Iowa and most recently, Lincoln. Both Wagey and Kohll’s are family-owned and operated businesses based in Nebraska, and have been able to maintain being independent retail pharmacies when it seems the big box pharmacies are popping up on every corner.
What’s their secret to success? “It’s simple,” says David Kohll, Pharm.D. and Co-Owner of Kohll’s Pharmacy & Homecare, “We try to treat every patient that comes through our doors as if they are family. The hallmark of our company is to give that small-town feeling while being able to offer the latest, most up-to-date technology and equipment that you can’t find anywhere else. That’s how we keep our edge with the larger chains.”
Although the appearance of Wagey Drug, now Kohll’s Wagey Drug, may have a more ‘aesthetic appeal’ on the exterior, and soon some upgrades inside as well, the core of this corner pharmacy is the same as it was during its founding in 1924. To provide the community with a pharmacy (and now including medical equipment provider) which will enhance one’s quality of life.
